Songs With A Mardi Gras Theme

mardi-gras-maskIt’s carnival time here once again in the states and with the party atmosphere taking a stronghold down in New Orleans this week I thought I would put together a small list of essential Mardi Gras themed music, with a few surprises thrown in at the bottom of this post. Unlike most of the other song lists or play lists I’ve created over the years in this section, the title does not just have to include the word ‘Mardi Gras’. The songs and videos below just need to have a feel for the annual New Orleans celebration. Some are even instrumentals with the sounds of Cajun, Creole, Blues, Jazz and Zydeco or a fusion mix. This is a relatively small list compared to other themed song lists I’ve done previously but should still give a good sampling of music for this special annual event known as Mardi Gras. Enjoy!

Impressive Young Singers From Around The World: TV & Video Performances

Sensational Young Singers Round The WorldThere have been some really good stand out vocal performances from young people from around the world that have made a positive impression in their local viewing area. Some may have even become minor celebrities in their home communities. But unless you’re a diehard Youtube follower, or they made national news coverage or widespread social media most people from others parts of the country (or world) would have no way of discovering their great voices without someone bringing it to your attention. That’s what my goal is here. Over the past several years I’ve enjoyed exploring videos from around the world of kids & young people who have given some really impressive performances. Most of the videos below are from the past 10 years or so, but I’ll also be including a few retro videos from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s of some of the future stars early in their careers. Many of the more recent performers are not necessarily recording stars, at least for now anyways. Please feel free to comment on your thoughts of these performances. There will undoubtedly be others out there that I’m not familiar with or aware of. Let me know below.

Impressive Young Singers From Around The World:

TV & Video Performances

Listings are arranged alphabetically by country of the young singers origin or longest residency (if known). I’m continually adding more videos to this post as time permits as well as when I discover more really good young talent. In reality, this list will never be complete as there is virtually no end in sight………. Enjoy!

Songs About Home

there-is-no-place-like-home-signThe thought of home conjures up so many fond memories for many of us as we get older and travel down the road of what life has offered. Some of us have moved many many miles from where we grew up at while others have remained relatively close to their roots. There’s no feeling like being home after a period of time away. Whichever is your particular circumstance, here are are some of the best songs out there about coming back after being away for sometime, returning home to the place where you grew up, or maybe even fondness for the place you’ve called home your entire life. It may even be about reminiscing or dreaming about home even though you may be miles and miles away and not able to return home at this time for one reason or another. Maybe a loved one has recently passed away and is returning home one last time for his/her final resting place. Whatever your situation might be, please enjoy this playlist and pick out the ones that feel right for you 🙂

Some of these songs may even make you feel ‘right at home’….. so to speak  😛 back-home-again

PLEASE NOTE: The one component I was looking for in creating this list is the fact that each of these songs have in common is that that word home or a form of the word home or house is part of the title.

Remember the above is only a partial (but still comprehensive) list of those that I’ve enjoyed from various genres of music over the years — Now I’m well aware that there are a number of others that I have unintentionally left out and more than likely several others I am not familiar with at all. Even some that I didn’t know originated in Canada

One more thing ….. there is one that I DID leave out on purpose ….. I will try to to somehow forgive our neighbors for exposing our ears to the likes of Justin Bieber  >8P ……………… Also I do NOT include rap artists (with rare exception) unless it’s ‘old-skool’ from the 80’s and 90’s

HAPPY CANADA DAY TO ALL!!!

Please feel free to comment below.

Who would you have included in the list?

What other songs would you have added that mention or descibe something or some place Canadian or make mention of Canada in the lyrics.

PS- I also intentionally omitted “Blame Canada” from the ‘South Park Movie’ because it doesn’t really invoke pride, just sarcastic humor. I’m a fan of South Park but didn’t feel right putting the song up there (even though it was meant to be sarcastic)

Songs About The Apocalypse Doomsday & The End of the World

doomsday 12.21.12

Well…. the long awaited day of reckoning is finally here….. 12/21/12

The loooong predicted date with destiny, known affectionately as Doomsday, is upon us due to the ancient Mayan “long count” Calendar finishing up it’s lengthy cycle today, which actually started 5,125-years back.

apocalypse-2012For those expecting solar flares to singe the earth’s surface, mass volcanic erruptions, mountains to collapse into the ocean, birds to plummet from the skies, meteors and planets to collide, crash, burn or explode, such awe-inspiring sights would seem to demand an encore musical soundtrack…. a well choreographed, synced-up, apocalypse-themed playlist. So…. If it’s truly the end of the world, gather the family, including the pets, friends and/or neighbors, grab your favorite “winter-time” beverage (as today is the first day of winter also, at least in the northern hemisphere) and enjoy the show with your favorite tunes you customized from the playlist below.

doomsday 2012And even if Doomsday doesn’t materialize this time around, you will always have it handy for the next time around.

So I present to you a somewhat extended list of songs which feature either an “apocalyptic” or a “post-apocalyptic” theme within it’s title or throughout it’s content. I know there’s more out there, but this should be a great start covering many genres of music to create your very own playlist when the mood strikes!

Enjoy the “end times” with choice music…. and if you’re still around afterwards, feel free to comment or add additional songs that you think should be here, at the bottom of this post.

Songs About Olympic Sporting Events

As the 2012 Olympic Games in London are in full force, I kinda thought it might be fun to do a relatively small random list of  some rather interesting songs that feature sporting events held at this summer’s current world games in London. I have listed, in no particular order, an eclectic variety of songs that feature an Olympic sport/event in the title or within the lyrics of the song. The lyrics may only reference a sporting event, but not necessarily have anything to with it other than use it as a metaphor to get across other subject matter.

Videos have been provided for each listing. This is by no means a complete list, just a sampling of some of the more interesting and diverse music out there. Enjoy…….and feel free to comment at the bottom of this post…… including any other song suggestions you wish I would or should have included.

Songs For Leap Day

Well… it’s that time again… that strange extra day we’re given on the calendar every four years. LEAP DAY happens like clockwork every four years. The month of February gains an extra day at the end of the month, February 29th to be specific, though still remains the shortest month of the year. Those lucky ones (or unlucky ones depending on your outlook) who were born on this date, also known as “leaplings”, theoretically have found the “Fountain of Youth” , so to speak, by aging just a ‘notch’ with a birthday (as far as the calendar shows) once every four years. Some choose to celebrate it on February 28th or March 1st during those ‘in-between’ years.

Another interesting tradition about Leap Year and/or Leap Day, is that women are obliged , according to old Irish or Scottish folklore, to propose to their fiance on February 29th giving a spike in engagements as well as weddings on this date every four years. This particular day is also known and celebrated as “Sadie Hawkins’ Day”, when women may propose to men. Many high schools stage Sadie Hawkins Day School Rallies and Evening Dances on this date where the girl asks the guy to go to the dance.

As far as music goes, there are countless songs themed towards many other holidays and special days such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas, but nothing really comes to mind on Leap Day or during Leap Year. So after some time doing a lot of searching for songs with a LEAP DAY theme, I decided to put together a slightly unusual list of songs with the word ‘leap’ or ‘jump’ in the title as well as a couple of other miscellaneous songs that mention ’29’ or ‘strange day’ in the title. I hope you enjoy the weird compilation mix here and I’ve included audio/videos of some so you can sample them. As in all of my other theme lists, you’ll find a wide genre mix here to hopefully satisfy your taste in music.
