10 More Ideas or Thoughts To Ponder Over

When you find yourself with just a little too much time on your hands, here are a few more thoughts to ponder over. I’m sure you may be able to relate to….. or have thought about one or two of the following ideas. Try not to spend to much time on each one 😛

  • Why is it that success usually occurs in private, and failure takes place in full view?
  • The severity of the itch is directly proportional to YOUR inability to reach it.
  • The sooner you fall behind, the more time you’ll have to catch up.
  • A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
  • Why isn’t phonetic spelled the way it sounds?
  • Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii?
  • Why does your nose run and your feet smell?
  • How can someone “draw a blank”?
  • How far east can you go before you’re heading west?
  • Why is it that everyone driving faster than you is considered an idiot and everyone driving slower than you is a moron?

What Modern Conveniences Could You NOT Live Without?

If we all took the time to stop whatever it is that we’re doing at the moment — even a brief moment — to think of all the modern conveniences and technology that fill our daily lives such as communication devices, computers, vehicles, appliances, televisions, audio and video players/recorders, power tools, electronic gadgets, etc. — it’s quite overwhelming! It’s simply amazing to think how dependent we have become on them as the years pass by. Can you imagine your life today without some of them?

What “Modern Conveniences” Do You Feel You Can’t Live Without?

Those of you born in the late 70’s or early 80’s  and beyond probably can’t remember a time when microwave ovens, cell phones, computers, cable television, and other modern conveniences and luxuries didn’t exist, but I was born in the late fifties, and I recall a time when life was much easier, simpler and considerably less expensive. Of course, even these days it isn’t really necessary to have a cell phone, cable or satellite television or even a computer, unless you’ve allowed yourself to be taken in by modern technology. Many of these modern conveniences I swore I’d never need or want, but now I find myself not wanting to live without them because they have made living so much easier.

Are you old enough to remember when cable television and satellite television didn’t exist? Or are you old enough to remember when there were only three networks on the air – ABC, CBS, NBC and they all signed off at midnight… except on Friday and Saturday nights? I vividly recall watching shows like Bonanza, Combat, Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke, Father Knows Best, Gilligan’s Island, The Flintstones, Wild Kingdom, and The Wonderful World of Disney on a 19-inch black and white television set with rabbit ears, and was quite content with that.

So… What Are Your Thoughts?

Nowadays there are more than ever modern conveniences — so many that I couldn’t even begin to list them all. The past three decades have seen amazing advances in technology, and the list of things that we’re used to at the present that were NOT even thought of when I was a child would probably span several pages. I’m fairly certain that it would be very difficult for younger people to imagine never owning many of the items we currently consider a commonplace staple, typical and/or necessary.

I guess that we can’t miss modern conveniences we’ve never had.

What “Modern Conveniences” Do You Feel You Couldn’t Live Without?

Your answers will greatly depend upon your age and what you grew up with and without. It will be interesting to learn what people in different age groups consider necessary, and what they consider an unnecessary modern convenience.

Give Your Input In The New Voter’s Poll

There is also a new voter’s poll (April/2010) in the right hand column of this website asking the same question… along with a sizable list of modern-day conveniences. Please take the time and give your input on this subject. You can also check to see how others have replied to this question at the bottom of the poll.

Incredible Hoax Websites For The Gullibly Challenged

Let me start off first by defining exactly what I mean by the words HOAX and GULLIBLE:

HOAX generally means to trick into believing or accepting as genuine something false and often preposterous — often meant to be a so-called prank, practical joke or spoof. It can also be defined as an act, document or artifact intended to deceive or defraud.

So that means that these  HOAX websites are basically fake or fictitious web pages — you might even call them funny spoof sites that will try to deceive you or fool you in some way, usually all in good fun — some are more convincing than others — but not necessarily all of them.

A GULLIBLE person can easily be ‘taken in’ or ‘tricked’, ‘deceived’ or ‘duped’. They are considered to be naive and not really alert to danger or deception, largely due to the ‘lack of worldly experience’.

Over the years, a number of enterprising individuals (entrepreneurs) have come up with clever, wacky as well as eye-catching ways to market and/or promote bizarre and unusual gadgets, inventions, behaviors, ideas or maybe try to sell non-existent products to those that would be gullible enough to fall for it. A few may even try to get you to believe in some concept or theory that is non-existent or you haven’t heard before. A number of these are amusing and fun while others are just incredibly lame or stupid. A growing number of new sites tend to pop-up around April 1st… April Fool’s Day. Tons of these sites have come and gone over the years… only to resurface again every so often. However, there are a few that have had “staying power” due to a variety of reasons… viral marketing… unusual promotions… social networking… overwhelming curiosity mixed with too much free time… etc.

People have published some hilarious, bizarre and strange things on the Internet and the world wide web has become a breeding ground for hoaxes. So, with all being said, here you will find some of the more interesting and intriguing sites that I consider among the best I’ve come across on the web.

So kick back and ENJOY the following sites at your own risk 😛

Soon your blood boils: “WHAT ARE YOU STARING AT, SLIM SHADY?” you scream. “I’LL SHOW YOU WHO THE REAL ONE IS.” The next thing you know, you’re throwing down the gauntlet and picking up the mouse. You Know You’ve Made It Through 2009 When…

Do you remember those days when you used to think that the remote control was the height of technological advancement? Even email has been around since 1969 but didn’t take hold commercial til 1988. Well – looks like it’s time for a reality check. Read on to see just how far you’ve come since those prehistoric times.

You know you’ve made it through 2009 when….

1.  You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave.

2.  You haven’t played solitaire with real cards in years.

3.  You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of four.

4.  You e-mail or instant message the person who works at the desk next to you.

5.  Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don’t have an e-mail address or a Twitter account (or for that matter Facebook or MySpace).

6.  You pull up in your own driveway and use your cell phone to see if anyone is home to help you carry in the groceries.

7.  Every commercial on television has a web site at the bottom of the screen.

8.  Leaving the house without your cell phone, which you didn’t even have the first 20 or 30 (or 50) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn around to go and get it.

10.  You get up in the morning and go online before getting your coffee.

11.  You text your kids in the next room to tell them dinner is ready.

12.  You start tilting your head sideways to smile. : )

13.  You’re reading this and nodding in agreement while laughing.

14.  Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are going to forward this message.

15.  You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

16.  You actually scrolled back up to check that there wasn’t a #9 on this list.

…..And FINALLY…..

……………….. You’re now actually laughing at yourself!! 😛

Now Go On……….

……….Forward this to your friends…..

………………..You know you want to!!

What Really Scares People: Top 10 Fears

What Really Scares People?

Here’s a question for you to ponder —

Is there anything you can think of, off the top of your head, that you have a fear (phobia) of ? — Be it real or imagined? — maybe ghosts, snakes, spiders, clowns, closets, thunder, the dark, enclosed places, the unknown, heights, flying, death, taxes as an example — Now, while it’s quite commonplace and normal for children to have a few fears while growing up, most of them are overcome as they get older. A few phobias, however, may possibly hang on into adulthood. With that being said, do you ever wonder what scares other people — specifically referring about adults?

A Little About Phobias

Phobias!Even the word sounds scary! — When you have an extreme fear (phobia) of something, it really IS scary.

Common phobias suffered by many people include:

  • Fear of public places (agoraphobia)
  • Fear of flying
  • Fear of public speaking
  • Fear of crowds
  • Fear of animals, or a particular kind of animal
  • Fear of darkness
  • Fear of crossing bridges
  • Fear of heights
  • Fear of driving
  • Fear of water
  • Fear of heart attacks (or other illness)
  • Social phobia

Sounds like quite a list, doesn’t it? — Believe me, this list is the tip of the iceberg. And don’t feel like you’re alone either. It is estimated that 1.8 million people suffer from agoraphobia alone! About 19.2 million people over the age of 18 suffer from some type of specific phobia in a given year! And YES – That’s a HUGE number.

Normal Fears -vs- Irrational Fears

Some fears are normal — We are born with some fears, which is actually a good thing, such as the fear of falling.

Other fears we acquire — Fear of getting hit by a car when you cross the street makes you more careful — Or the fear of cutting yourself helps you be more cautious when using knives and scissors.

However, some fears are irrational phobias. You may even understand that the fear or phobia you have is irrational. Yet, your extreme fear overshadows your rational mind and you give in to the phobia.

10 Most Common Fears

Here are the 10 most common fears (along with their scientific name) that have been widely reported by the adult population, including a brief description of the situation.

(1) – Arachnophobia – The fear of spiders

Seems to be no escape from these eight-legged creatures. They live in our houses, yards and even our work places. The most die-hard arachnophobes are even scared of pictures of spiders.

(2) – Social phobia – The fear of social situations

More than just simple shyness — This is an extreme fear of being scrutinised by others, or by being humiliated even by your own actions.

(3) – Aerophobia – The fear of flying

Generally meant to be by airplane, however it can crossover into another fear of being suspended above ground – known as acrophobia (see #6 below). Also, this can often be paired with claustrophobia (see #5 below).

(4) – Agoraphobia – The fear of inescapable situations

The result is anxiety and panic attacks, which can easily become self-perpetuating. Extreme agoraphobes are confined to their own home, which is the only place they consider to be safe.

(5) – Claustrophobia – The fear of confined spaces

These poor sufferers will stay well away from elevators, trains and tiny cupboards under the stairwells. May cause panic attacks if escape is not possible.

(6) – Acrophobia – The fear of heights

Sufferers may have panic attacks and put themselves in genuine danger if they can’t get down. Often confused with vertigo – which is merely a dizzy or spinning sensation and not necessarily caused by heights.

(7) – Emetophobia – The fear of vomit

This one nobody even likes to THINK about. No one likes the sight or smell of vomit, but these sufferers will go to extraordinary lengths to avoid the stuff.

(8) – Carcinophobia – The fear of cancer

Although it’s not contagious, a carcinophobe will believe he/she has cancer because he/she has touched someone else with the disease.

(9) – Brontophobia – The fear of thunderstorms

Also known as astraphobia. This is one of those fears that may ‘holdover’ from childhood. Child and adult sufferers alike hide away from thunder and lightning, lest they suffer panic attacks and have difficulty breathing.

(10) – Necrophobia – The fear of death

Derived from the fear of being buried alive, after early excavations of coffins showed scratch marks made by trapped victims. Also relates to coffins and corpses.

Overall Effects of Phobias

Phobias lead to anxiety attacks and depression. Those people affected many times prefer to lead a secluded life for fear of being laughed at. They feel awful and have an extremely difficult time facing the world and owning up to their strange and bizarre phobias. Professional help may be the order of the day to help overcome these fears and lead a somewhat normal existence.

Uncommon & Bizarre Phobias

Instead of an evolutionary or culture-led phobia, there may be a separate explanation for weird or strange phobias, such as the fear of cheese. This group of phobias may be linked to deep-seated psychological trauma. For whatever reason, that inanimate object or non-threatening situation has become the focus of the fear, and acts as a trigger for stored feelings of anxiety.

The common “specific phobias” – such as the fear of spiders, or snakes, or being struck by lightning – are all understandable… at least on some level. We may not fully understand the extreme fear response some people give them but somewhere in there is a threat to survival.
