Songs With A Mardi Gras Theme

mardi-gras-maskIt’s carnival time here once again in the states and with the party atmosphere taking a stronghold down in New Orleans this week I thought I would put together a small list of essential Mardi Gras themed music, with a few surprises thrown in at the bottom of this post. Unlike most of the other song lists or play lists I’ve created over the years in this section, the title does not just have to include the word ‘Mardi Gras’. The songs and videos below just need to have a feel for the annual New Orleans celebration. Some are even instrumentals with the sounds of Cajun, Creole, Blues, Jazz and Zydeco or a fusion mix. This is a relatively small list compared to other themed song lists I’ve done previously but should still give a good sampling of music for this special annual event known as Mardi Gras. Enjoy!

Big Chief – Earl King

Carnival Time – Al Johnson

Fire On The Bayou – The Meters

Go To The Mardi Gras – Professor Longhair

Goin’ Back To New Orleans – Dr. John

Hey Pocky A-Way – The Meters

I Went To The Mardi Gras – Snooks Eaglin

La Danse De Mardi Gras (Mardi Gras Song) – Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys

Mardi Gras Day – Dr. John

Mardi Gras In New Orleans – Fats Domino

Mardi Gras In New Orleans – Professor Longhair

Mardi Gras Mambo – The Hawketts

Meet De Boys On The Battlefront – Wild Tchoupitoulas

Take Me To The Mardi Gras – Paul Simon

The Day After Mardi Gras – The Lakefront Loungers

The Second Line – Stop, Inc

When The Saints Go Marching In – Louis Armstrong

Who Dat At Da Mardi Gras – Jake Da Snake

************ BONUS ************

Enjoy a couple more off-the-wall sounds of Mardi Gras…. with a humorous twist…..

Ain’t No Place To Pee On Mardi Gras Day – Benny Grunch

Mardi Gras Funk!  (Parody of “Uptown Funk”) – Melissa Stevenson

Diggy Liggy Lo – Dou Kershaw (“The Rajun Cajun”)

Down At The Twist & Shout – Mary Chapin Carpenter

Jambalaya On The Bayou – John Fogerty (Blue Ridge Rangers)

When The Saints Go Marching In – Pelican 212

(an amazing family brass band that have appeared recently on national TV)

************ ENCORE ************

and here’s one more that sums up the unmistaken sounds of the season…………

New Orleans Creole / Cajun / Zydeco / Blues / Jazz Music of Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday / NOLA Saints

Impressive Young Singers From Around The World: TV & Video Performances

Sensational Young Singers Round The WorldThere have been some really good stand out vocal performances from young people from around the world that have made a positive impression in their local viewing area. Some may have even become minor celebrities in their home communities. But unless you’re a diehard Youtube follower, or they made national news coverage or widespread social media most people from others parts of the country (or world) would have no way of discovering their great voices without someone bringing it to your attention. That’s what my goal is here. Over the past several years I’ve enjoyed exploring videos from around the world of kids & young people who have given some really impressive performances. Most of the videos below are from the past 10 years or so, but I’ll also be including a few retro videos from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s of some of the future stars early in their careers. Many of the more recent performers are not necessarily recording stars, at least for now anyways. Please feel free to comment on your thoughts of these performances. There will undoubtedly be others out there that I’m not familiar with or aware of. Let me know below.

Songs About Nostalgia That Reference Specific People Places Things or Events of the Past / UPDATED 2017

2017 UPDATE – Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you know that I just completed a major overhaul and update of this older post of mine about SONGS ABOUT NOSTALGIA THAT REFERENCE SPECIFIC PEOPLE, PLACES THINGS OR EVENTS OF THE PAST. There have been several more songs added, complete with videos. I’ve tried to include as many videos with lyrics so you can follow along. There have also been a few corrections and changes too. Please click the link below to take you to this updated post.

Songs About Nostalgia That Reference Specific People Places Things or Events of the Past

Over the years we can all relate to good times and bad times in our lives. Some are rewarding  experiences that seem to make that moment in time stand still while others are unpleasant or emotional events that leave a lasting impression or hurt in our heads, hearts and souls. There are a few songs  out there that specifically mention these events or people or objects that bring back these times to those of us who have lived through them. These particular songs can attest to a particular time in our past that evoke memories of that particular era.

So here I present to you a few songs with videos that reference, reflect, mention or list specific people, places, things, events and dates of the past. Some of the videos presented here also include song lyrics of vivid childhood images and  memories of what it was like growing up with favorite past times, celebrities, heroes, fads, games, toys, pop culture (music, movies and TV), etc. Some of the recollections also include unpleasant or sad events such as deaths of famous people, destruction, tragedies, war and so forth.

So sit back and enjoy the following videos of songs that evoke memories and/or pay homage to specific and/or real people, places or things of our past. If you can think of others please feel free to let me know in the comment section at the bottom of this post.

Super Bowl’s Greatest TV Commercials of All-Time: A Look Back Over 50 Years

super-bowls-greatest-commercials-logoIt’s that time of year again, the grand finale of the American football season, the SUPER BOWL, complete with all the hype that leads up to it, especially over the past two weeks. Even for the non-football fans, the commercials can be the main attraction along with the half time show, usually a music extravaganza. The focus here is strictly on those television commercials, the ones that the largest sponsors pay mega-bucks for, this year having hit around the five million dollar mark – and that’s per sixty second ad! This is the time of year sponsors pitch their best ad, knowing that this is the “holy grail” of TV viewership, millions and millions of viewers worldwide. Some are quite humorous, some are thought provoking, some are sentimental, some are bizarre, but most all of them are memorable for a long time afterwards, which is why they’re initially shown during this time to begin with. Most Forgotten Old Cartoon Characters

chilly-willyLet me start off first by saying that every age group is going to have a different opinion of what is considered OLD. I’m gonna pretty much rule out anything that has come out since 1990. I’m also gonna rule out any cartoon or animated characters that have been brought back to be made into a new movie release or a sequel…. same rule will apply for television. I’m trying to focus on long lost characters that us older folks (I’m 60 so I think I qualify :P) fondly remember from our childhood. Most of these characters have long since been forgotten. Some of these will date back to the early days of TV, the 1950’s and 60’s, others from the movies or comics may date back to the 1930’s and 40’s. There are still quite a few below from the 1970’s and 80’s as well.

Needless to say, this list is not meant to be all-inclusive, just a sampling of some of thecolonel-kit-coyotego-go-gophers most beloved characters from our past which have not been revived into a new series or film release. Let me know below who your favorites are from your younger years. Just remember they have to be cartoons, comics, animation, fictional movie characters that are NOT being shown on TV or the movies any more, other than in occasional reruns.

As always the listings appear in alphabetical order to make characters easier to find.
