Well… it’s that time again… that strange extra day we’re given on the calendar every four years. LEAP DAY happens like clockwork every four years. The month of February gains an extra day at the end of the month, February 29th to be specific, though still remains the shortest month of the year. Those lucky ones (or unlucky ones depending on your outlook) who were born on this date, also known as “leaplings”, theoretically have found the “Fountain of Youth” , so to speak, by aging just a ‘notch’ with a birthday (as far as the calendar shows) once every four years. Some choose to celebrate it on February 28th or March 1st during those ‘in-between’ years.
Another interesting tradition about Leap Year and/or Leap Day, is that women are obliged , according to old Irish or Scottish folklore, to propose to their fiance on February 29th giving a spike in engagements as well as weddings on this date every four years. This particular day is also known and celebrated as “Sadie Hawkins’ Day”, when women may propose to men. Many high schools stage Sadie Hawkins Day School Rallies and Evening Dances on this date where the girl asks the guy to go to the dance.
As far as music goes, there are countless songs themed towards many other holidays and special days such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas, but nothing really comes to mind on Leap Day or during Leap Year. So after some time doing a lot of searching for songs with a LEAP DAY theme, I decided to put together a slightly unusual list of songs with the word ‘leap’ or ‘jump’ in the title as well as a couple of other miscellaneous songs that mention ’29’ or ‘strange day’ in the title. I hope you enjoy the weird compilation mix here and I’ve included audio/videos of some so you can sample them. As in all of my other theme lists, you’ll find a wide genre mix here to hopefully satisfy your taste in music.
