Songs About Grief & Loss of A Loved One

Unfortunately in our lifetime we will all face the inevitable….. the loss of a loved one – be it a parent, grandparent, sibling, child, family member, close friend, significant other or even a family pet. The death of that loved one has got to be one of the most powerful events that we will face in our lifetime. I also believe that almost everyone who has ever lost someone they really loved will remember them through the power of music – by a song that relates to a memorable experience in their life – a moment that is frozen in time. Everyone has there own personal way of coping with grief and it varies from person to person. Sometimes it helps to cleanse your mind with tears when emotions build up inside – and to have a support group nearby to turn to for emotional support.

Remember A Lost Loved One Through Song

Most people should be able to relate to at least one song from the list below. When all is said and done, it takes time to heal and eventually we all learn to move on – never to forget – but hold a place in your heart for that loved one that is no longer here in the physical sense but with you always in spirit. I hope you will find something special in the music below that you can relate to….. and help in the healing process. This may also help you in putting together a custom cd to play or distribute to guests at a funeral , memorial service or celebration of life. I realize not all of the songs below are appropriate for such but are included here because of the grief, suffering or loss of a loved one contained within the lyrics.

Music has a way of touching your soul like nothing else can – without any thought process – just pure human emotion. Consider these as songs from the heart…..

  5. Saving Amy – Brantley Gilbert

  6. When I lost the love of my life over 8 years ago. I came across this song by Jessica Andrews called “Never Be Forgotten.” There was some kind of peace I found within the lyrics. “Never Be Forgotten” played a major role in my healing process. To this day if I am feeling lost or sad I listen to the song and I find peace within myself. I know that as long as I am among the living, she will never be forgotten, because I will always keep her memory alive.

My cousin were the people on the news that were killed in the helicaptor crash in Hawiia on the honeymoon their names were Nicole Bevilacque and Mike Abel just got married six days after the helicaptor crash in Hawiia. They were a nice, funny, bright, intellgent, great, perfect couple too and it was just sad about there death. Nicole Bevilacque was 28 and Mike Abel was 25 I think I am not sure.

  10. Alicia Keys Like You’ll Never See Me Again

  11. I can’t believe no one even thought about ‘Fly To The Angels’ by Slaughter. It’s got to be one of the most crystal clear songs of actually losing a loved one to God. A lot of the songs I seen listed I don’t think had anything to do with a loved one dying.

  12. Angels On The Moon by Thriving Ivory

  13. I’m trying to find a song. My son died on Feb. 26 2008 and I heard this song named In my heart. I can’t get it out of my mind but I can’t find it. Please someone helps me.

    • It is called “Precious Child” By:Karen Taylor-Good 🙂 When my Son died in 2008 also…it really helped me through. 🙂

  14. Monday Morning Church by Alan Jackson…

  15. I lost my 19yr old daughter and new mother with her 7mos of battling cervical cancer. Im looking for good a song plz help, shes to young and left to fast and now her baby will grow up without her ❤

  16. I think you should add the best song about losing a loved one… where my sons are still alive…. they are more than a 2 day drive from me and they are only 3 & 4… I miss them very dearly and it feels like I’m dead on the inside… but the song that helps me grieve is Hurt by Johnny Cash/Nine Inch Nails/Christina Aguilara… originally done by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails… But you can hear the pain so much more clearly in Johnny Cash’s voice as he has lost his best friend (his wife)… Thats the exact feeling i get… I lost my 2 best friends!

  17. I love the list there but I belive songs like Gabriel Peter: I grieve and Stacey Earle: live and breathe should be included

  18. Gather to the Chapel – Liam Finn

  19. Very appropriate site…thank you for sharing!!!

  20. The song called Goodbyes(The Saddest Word) by Celion Dion is a good song if you have lost your mom.

    • I just lost my mom the other day. My best friend had me listen to the song n it truly is a great song for a daughter/s who have lost there mom.

  21. Also: Faith Hill – You’re Still Here. Love this song, it helped me through after my beloved Grandmother passed away. She raised me, she was like a mother to me. She died very painfully and I was with her during her last three days. She died in my arms and tore my soul into pieces, that wound will never be healed… I miss her so much even right now, two years after. She is still here…

Another beautiful song: Bell, Book and Candle – See Ya

  22. Also heart string jerkers:
GOOD BYE MY LOVER, James Blunt.

    INSIDE OF ME, Madonna

SAIL AWAY WITH ME, David Gray

    SHALLOW SLEEP, Hyde (Japanese pop)

  23. A song I wrote called “more time”
    God Bless…………’LOVE NEVER DIES’

  24. Another great song…sang this at both grandmother’s memorials..

  25. I include the song Angel by Sarah McLachlan when my Father died 3 years ago. I also think that the song I Will Be Here by Steven Curtis Chapman is a solemn and deep song during this painful event.

  26. Nice list. You missed Say Hello 2 Heaven by Temple of the Dog. The whole album was recorded as a tribute to Andrew Wood, the singer of the Seattle band Mother Love Bone who had recently died.

  27. Songs About Grief & Loss of A Loved One Reflections of
Pop Culture & Life’s Challenges, seemed to be a wonderful post title to give this particular post. Where can I read even more about this?

  28. Lost – Amanda Palmer
    Beam Me Up – P!nk
    It’s A Loss – Rilo Kiley
    Go First – Rose Cousins

  29. My Immortal – Evanescence

  30. Corina Round: For everything a reason
    Sarah Mclachlan: Hold On
Both are about losing a lover, but they transcend that to be relatable to any loss by death, I think. They helped me cope with the loss of my husband, and then, more recently, the loss of my father. Music is indeed cathartic in many ways, and is a perfect tool to help cope with grief. Thank you for compiling this list, I’m sure it has helped some folks through tough times when in need of something to listen to that they could relate to their own lives and situation.

  31. Also!
    Kate Bush: This Woman’s Work
Rascal Flatts: What Hurts the Most
The Cranberries: No Need to Argue
Willie Nelson: Always on my Mind
There are so many more I can’t place right now- I hope you don’t mind- I will likely inundate you with comments when I remember. Thank you again for putting forth the effort to make this list!!

  32. I absolutely love Who You Are by Jessie J

  33. Ripping My Heart Out – Juxtapain
Great song for coping and overcoming grief.
